Keep adhesive surface free of dirt and grease. Only cut back adhesive surface shortly before installation. Do not prime or use a cleaning solution on the adhesive surface. Make sure there is a slight overlap at adhesive joining points, otherwise there may be leaks in these areas.

a. Remove the 2 clips using a clip remover, then open the cover.
b. Disconnect the 4 ECM connectors.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. TIMING BELT Removal (200SX & 300ZX) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Release fuel pressure from system. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right wheel and engine side cover (if necessary). Drain cooling system. Remove cooling fan duct. Remove engine coolant reservoir. Remove actuator and remove radiator hoses. Do not allow coolant to contact drive belts. 2. Remove front upper and lower belt covers. See Fig. 1 . Remove drive belts and set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Remove idler bracket of compressor drive belt and crankshaft pulley. Remove timing belt by removing timing belt tensioner and return spring.

Before removing, note position of electrical connector on CMP sensor. Disconnect CMP sensor electrical connector. NOTE: For Explorer models with 4.0L push rod engine, remove the upper intake manifold. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (4.0L VINX) under UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD. 4. Remove CMP sensor screws and CMP sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure CMP sensor electrical connector is pointing in original direction. Tighten CMP sensor to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . NOTE: If the synchronizer is turned while removing the CMP sensor, it must be re-aligned before CMP sensor is installed. See CMP.

1999 Subaru Forester S Timing Belt Removal and Installation
Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine under cover. 2. Lower vehicle. Remove radiator coolant reservoir, and set aside. Remove electric cooling fan and radiator shroud. 3. On Impreza and Forester, remove accessory drive belt cover. On all models, remove accessory drive belts. 4. Hold crankshaft pulley stationary, and remove crankshaft pulley center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove timing belt covers. 5. Turn crankshaft to align crankshaft and camshaft timing notches with marks on rear timing cover and engine block. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 . On manual transmission models, remove timing belt guide from top of crankshaft pulley. 6. On all models, if reusing old belt, use White paint to mark timing belt in relation to sprocket timing marks. See Fig. 3. Also mark timing belt direction of travel. On 2000 and newer vehicles, count number of teeth between marks. For correct count, see INSTALLATION MARK MEASUREMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. 7. Remove No. 2 timing belt idler pulley. See Fig. 4. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt automatic tensioner with rod facing up.
