Audi TT Coupe (U.S. Version) Fog Light Modification for Daytime Running Light Operation
The U.S. Version of the Audi TT Coupe (and Roadster) does not come factory equipped with daytime running light capability. Daytime running lights being headlamps or similar, smaller lamps that are on whenever the ignition of the car is on. These lamps then also remain on when the parking lights and the headlights are turned on. I feel daytime running lights add to the safety level and overall appearance of any car. You’re more visible to pedestrians and other motorists and the car looks better in the frontal view. So, the challenge was to determine the best way to add daytime running lights to the TT Coupe. Since the TT is equipped with fog lights that are built in to the headlight cluster the plan was to try to modify the circuitry controlling the fog lights to make them behave like daytime running lights. However, I also needed to retain the normal on/off fog light operation during use of the headlights.

2008 Volkswagen Passat TSI EcoFuel Natural Gas Concept

The Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS engine running on either natural gas or petrol. The engine features both a supercharger and a turbocharger operating sequentially to provide relatively high power outputs from a small capacity engine. In order to allow the engine to cope with the additional loading encountered through the burning of natural gas rather than gasoline, significant changes are made. The valves, piston rings and the pistons themselves are all uprated to cope while the turbocharger has also been replaced with a smaller unit. Controlling the switch between conventional fuel and natural gas is a new engine management computer.

2008 Volkswagen Passat Adds Park Assist

There is something decidedly fantastical about this scene: We observe the approach of a Passat estate, it stops, the driver gets out, slams the door shut and, as he walks away from the car, he aims a remote control back at it. That car now proceeds to reverse park itself into the available space, it then independently cuts the engine and activates the door locks. End of performance. In reality, there is nothing at all fantastical about this demonstration. The live performance by Volkswagen can be viewed at this year’s Hanover Fair (21 to 25 April), where the carmaker is premiering its “Park Assist Vision”, a system with the ability to guide a Passat prototype with absolute precision into a perpendicular parking space, i.e. the kind available on parking lots and in underground car parks. These parking spaces are often too narrow to allow drivers and passengers to get in and out of the car comfortably. In the not too distant future, “Park Assist Vision” will put an end to that.
