1984-1995 Honda Accord/Prelude Emissions PVC testing

The PCV valve is easily checked with the engine running at normal idle speed (warmed up). Gently pinch the hose shut, then release it; the valve should click. If there is no click, check for plugged hoses or ports. If these are open, the valve is faulty. With the engine OFF, remove the valve from the engine. Shake it, listening for the rattle of the plunger inside the valve. If no rattle is heard, the plunger is jammed (probably with oil sludge) and should be replaced. Never operate the engine without the PCV valve or with the hose blocked.
Don’t blow directly into the valve in an effort to free the plunger; petroleum vapors and deposits within the valve are harmful.

On-Board Diagnostic systems (OBD) were developed in the 1980s to help technicians diagnose and service the computerized engine systems of modern vehicles. A new generation of these systems is found in 1996 model and newer vehicles. These new systems, regardless of the type of vehicles, now monitor the same components, use the same computer “language” and have the same criteria for evaluating the systems and for indicating the problems to the driver and the repair The OBD system provides drivers with an early warning of malfunctions through a dashboard “Check Engine” light (also known as a Malfunction Indicator Light or MIL). This early warning light not only helps protect the environment, and helps consumers, by identifying minor problems before they become major repair bills.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Fuel Consumption. Although there are no mandatory in-use compliance requirements for fuel consumption and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions measurements, these parameters are subject to Conformity of Production requirements for new vehicles. Whilst these requirements do not strictly apply to in-use vehicles, the fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions measurements from this programme have been assessed against the conformity of production requirements to give an indication of whether in-use vehicles differ significantly from the type approval measurements. For CO2, an initial sample of three vehicles is tested and the test statistic defined in directive 80/1268 EEC (as amended) is calculated. By comparing the test statistic with the Pass and Fail decision thresholds a Vehicle model can be determined to Pass, Fail, or require more vehicles to be tested.
