2010 Ford Fiesta USA Launch

Ford has announced the new Ford Fiesta small car for North America will be produced at the company’s transformed Cuautitlán Assembly Plant beginning in early 2010 and a sporty European hatchback model is being added to the North American lineup alongside the popular sedan.
Transformation of the facility near Mexico City begins this year, as the plant is converted from its current production of F-Series pickups for the Mexican market to small cars for all of North America. The Chihuahua Engine Plant, which builds I-4 engines, also will assemble diesel engines for light- and medium-duty trucks in a variety of global markets. In addition, through a joint venture with Getrag (GFT), Ford will establish a new transmission plant in Guanajuato to support various Ford products. Company officials announced the trio of investments jointly with Mexico President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

Ford Fiesta Global Heritage
For the U.S. and Canada Fiesta arrived as a 1978 model, equipped with the 1.6-liter Kent OHV I-4 engine – the largest offering in European markets. This sturdy block earned an enviable motorsport reputation by powering a legion of Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) competitors in Formula Ford single-seat racing cars. Fiesta paired the Kent engine with a mandatory four-speed manual transmission and wrapped it in a light-weight body. The car became an instant favorite. Car and Driver pushed a Fiesta from 0-60 in 10.4 seconds and to an observed 97mph top speed.

Ford Fiesta/Mazda 121 Car Test
At the time of writing, the Fiesta 1.25LX’s list price is a bit lower than the 121 ZX equivalent, but when you add the extras to the Ford to match the 121’s standard kit, it’s the Mazda that comes out cheaper. As well as this equipment (with the optional central locking pack and power steering) the Fiesta also boasts a handset control for its locks and some interior courtesy lighting that the 121 lacks. On the other hand, the Mazda comes with a useful front seat map pocket, painted bumpers (look good but less practical), a fully sliding sunroof and wider-section tyres. It also has a three- year/60,000-mile warranty – but see our “Costs in Service” panel. You can’t buy a 1.4 Mazda at present, however, as this even more attractive power unit is a Ford prerogative. Actually, both these engines were developed with the help of Yamaha – the politics of the modern motor industry are as complex as the products!
